New Sounds Gig Alert for Mingus Big Band

By John Schaefer

The great jazz composer and bassist Charles Mingus’ jaunty tune, “Moanin’,” is one of Mingus’s enduring favorites. (Ed. note: the more well-known tune which shares the same title, “Moanin’,” was made popular by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.) Since 1991, the Mingus Big Band, founded by his widow, Sue Mingus, has kept his music alive with a series of weekly residencies here in New York. Their current residency Mingus Mondays will be resuming in January of 2022 only at The Django.

This December, Mingus Big Band will perform Tuesdays at The Django, which is in cellar of the Roxy Hotel New York. Expect to hear songs like Moanin’ – sometimes in unexpected arrangements. The Mingus Big Band plays the next two Tuesday nights, Dec. 21 and 28, at The Django.
