Hailing from New Orleans, acclaimed bassist John Hébert is no stranger to great music, food, and good times. Growing up in a Cajun household, he was introduced to the traditional foods of South Louisiana and its swamp rhythms. Upon leaving home in 1992 for New York City, it was certain that John would continue this tradition in the Northeast. A visit to the Hébert household will often contain smells of a dark roux brewing in the winter and BBQ in the summertime. When not cooking gumbo or smoking some ribs on the grill, John can be found out on the lake fishing for largemouth bass. When not fishing or eating, Hebert can be heard playing the double bass. There are quite a few musicians who not only enjoy his cooking but also his bass playing. Some of the artists that have shared a dinner table and bandstand with John include Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz, Paul Bley, John Abercrombie, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, David Liebman, Uri Caine, Greg Osby, Bill Stewart, Marc Copland, Fred Hersch, Benoit Delbecq, Maria Schneider, Mary Halvorson, Tim Berne and many others. John continues his pursuits in improvising, education, and culinary exploits.
